someone tries to narrow themselves into being a very specific person for the sake of developing a
sense of individuality, & succeeds at doing that. but as they become more specific, they start
becoming blind to things that are sufficiently different to them. that stuff "falls off their
radar". so they unconsciously move the goalposts. they dig deeper into the layers of
specificity, towards some core of ultimate individuality, but since they don't
always acknowledge the layers above them, they always feel like they're on
the very exterior of something that's defined by the people adjacent to
them, & they feel like that region that they're at the exterior of is
all there is. & all those people adjacent to them are themselves
very specific, but they all feel this way, & so you get
communities of people inexplicably tearing at each
other over their own commonalities
